Glutamine: Like Creatine, Glutamine is also found in skeletal muscle. The functions of Glutamine in the body include acid-base balance, nitrogen supply and protein synthesis. Glutamine is commonly used as a supplement to improve muscle function, decrease fatigue and improve recovery in exercising athletes (16). In human research, strenuous exercise decreased plasma levels of glutamine (17), and glutamine supplementation promoted storage of muscle glycogen following exercise (18). Furthermore, the provision of supplementary glutamine may spare muscle protein in the case of inadequate dietary intake and increase the cellular hydration status (20), which may be an anabolic signal (21). Glutamine’s role in immune support for exercising individuals has also been researched (19) and it is commonly used, in combination with protein, to increase muscle growth and improve immunity in well-trained individuals.

Carbohydrates: The physiological and performance effects of carbohydrate supplementation on aerobic endurance exercise have been extensively studied. Research also suggests that resistance exercise can reduce muscle glycogen stores, leading to fatigue and strength loss(22). So whether you are doing endurance training or weights, ingestion of carbohydrates is important. Carbohydrate ingestion can help enhance muscle glycogen re-synthesis, decrease recovery time and enable an increase in training volume(23).
Protein Blend: Proteins can be broadly classified as either fast or slow depending on how quickly they are absorbed (24). Prior to and immediately following exercise it may be beneficial to ingest protein sources that are rapidly absorbed and provide the muscle with amino acids to stimulate protein synthesis. However, a slow protein source may be beneficial to ensure the maintenance of blood amino acids in the hours after exercise and to promote an anti-catabolic environment.
