When we talk about losing weight and calorie deficits, we’re talking about intaking fewer calories than our body requires. So if our BMR is 2000 calories, a calorie deficit can be achieved by only eating/drinking 1500 calories per day. This creates a difference of 500 calories, which the body then needs to source from fat stores in order to continue functioning as per usual, hence, fat loss! The opposite is true for weight gain, where you’d be eating a calorie surplus (which might be 2500 calories, in this example).
